LOCAL HISTORY

History has always been a major part of my life and in school at Oswestry it was my top subject.

Whilst I enjoy history in general I particularly enjoy Local History and constantly try to get locals and visitors interested in the rich history that Welshpool has to offer.

Since 2008 I have organised the town's annual "Be a Local Tourist" week which takes place the first full week of July. This includes a number of walks, slide shows, exhibitions, displays of old photographs, open houses and gardens, plus much more! Details can be found by clicking on the link above.

I have put together a website Memories of Welshpool which again contains old photographs, details of events about the history of the town and so forth.

A number of products that I have produced promoting the history of the town are available from the Tourist Information Centre by Church Street carpark. These include notelets depicting a view of Christ Church, a  Welshpool history poster, a DVD of the 50th anniversary celebrations of VE VJ Day held in 1995. More products to be added soon.

GUIDED WALK: Any group, individual or family interested in a guided walk along the route of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway when it passed through the town centre. This is illustrated with photographs of the train at various points along the route.

BOOKS: I am currently researching material for a couple of local history themed books- "Welshpool At War 1939 - 1945" and one about all the entertainers that have emerged from Mid Wales over the years. See writers page on this site. My own autobiography, my book on Welshpool Pantomime Society and my forthcoming book on Welshpool St Mary's Players & Singers also contains newspaper reports, archive photographs and much more.

WLLR TOWN TRAIL: I am currently working on creating a trail through the town along the route that
the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway took when it originally passed through the town - through housing estates, across streets, and between shops. The trail will comprise of murals, information panels, and direction signs. Already 2 murals are in place with the one pictured on the wall in Church Street which is the actual point where the train emerged from between two shops to cross Church Street as it made its way to the mainline station.
